True, I can't argue with that. Even when I disagree I still like hearing their opinion (and Eberts negative reviews are generally entertaining; many of which are for movies I like, but still enjoyable to read).

Personally, the Star Wars franchise was killed by The Phantom Menace. Haven’t watched a minute of what followed.

I came to kinda like TPM but rarely if ever re-watch the following two (Clones and Revenge).

I haven’t watched any of the Trek reboot, and the little bit of the TV show that aired on broadcast TV guaranteed I wasn’t going to pay for a subscription service to continue watching it. I haven’t watched any of the subsequent Trek series either.

IMO you're missing out on quite a lot. The first Trek reboot movie is plain ol' good times (though the next few are iffy), and the new series I've seen any of - being Picard and Discovery - are very good.

The first few seasons of both Picard and Discovery are (or were) available on DVD, which is how I watched them. (there was a video-rental outfit two blocks from where I live that carried all this stuff, but sadly it closed for good two weeks ago)

To be fair, part of that IS because I generally refuse to pay for subscription services in addition to or substituting for my cable service.

I view critics much the same as people who spend way too much time picking apart RPGs on forums. Yes, they may know more about the industry, the processes, the hits, and misses than your average person, but so what? The average person is still going to enjoy the thing regardless of the minor flub of mise en scène in act two or the mechanics not being perfectly detailed. The critic will rant endlessly about the flaws of the thing while the average person will still happily enjoy the thing. Both versions of critics need to be reminded to zip it and just let people enjoy things.

Did you buy a ticket to the movie thinking that you were buying the book?

Usually, yes: I'm buying a ticket to see the book visualized and put on the screen. Some franchises get this (Harry Potter, LotR are two), others kinda don't.

And if I haven't read the book first then it doesn't matter.

If not, then you should not have expected to read the book.

But if I have read the book and the movie is purporting to be representative of said book, then it's valid to feel ripped off if the movie pays little heed to the source material...even if in comparison the movie ends up being far better.

I love TNG but can’t stand Picard as a series. I watched the first and checked out after that. Same with Discovery. Way too reminiscent of Abrams’ action-Trek.

Strange New Worlds, however, is pitch perfect old-school Trek. I hope they make 6-7 seasons of that show at least.

The Star Wars prequels are like wuxia in a samurai franchise. I love the action, but they never felt cohesive with the originals. The less said about the sequels the better. Rogue One, Mando, and Andor are some of the best Star Wars ever made. Absolutely nailed many elements of what I loved about the originals.
