[Updated] Newsradio Seasons 1 & 2 on DVD - Delayed!!

Hartman's loss was felt in the fifth season and the show was different but still very funny. The later episodes in that season were significantly better as Lovitz found a better rhythm with the rest of the cast. I read a long online essay that was very comprehensive that focused on Newsradio. It mentioned Lisa (Tierney) and how important she was to the rest of the cast. She was basically the straight-man along with Dave (they traded off, often) as well as the sexual energy that drove the show.

I'll have to dig up the link as it was really a great read...

Edit: Found it. :) http://www.newsradioart.com/

My only problem with the final season was that they made Dave a little too goofy, and adding Lovitz really made everything too silly. Beth and Matthew were enough as far as silly went. They needed another deadpan guy, like Hartman was.

My wife and I watched the show a lot in syndication. I was royally bummed with Hartman was killed. But I have to confess, the year after he died, the show still cracked me up quite a bit. It certainly wasn't the same show, and not quite as funny, but I still thought it was good.

I wonder how much longer it would have lasted with Phil...

I did find some funny moments in the post-Hartman episodes but really my problem was always thinking that it should have been Phil that said that line.

Darn - now I'm bummed :(

I agree but Lovitz did get into a rythym toward the end.

And even tho Dave did a little spastic toward the end of the show, I did love the "finale" of the series.

And Jimmy James-one of the best sitcom characters ever.

All I can say is....wooot!

Updated...

If anyone has been following this, the set has been delayed. But, this isn't a bad thing. It seems that Paul Simms, the creator has decided to add something to the mix...

From TVShowsOnDVD.com -
A few weeks ago we told you that NewsRadio was delayed. The set was originally scheduled for release on Feb 3rd, and the new date, or the reason for the delay, wasn't known.

This past week we contacted Columbia TriStar to find out why the set was delayed, and we got some good news. The set that was to be released in Feb was going to be a 3 disc set with very few special features. Creator Paul Simms caught wind of this and called Columbia TriStar and asked to take part in the set. Simms has material that can be used for special features and plans to add more. Because of Simms' involvement, the set couldn't be finished for 2/03, and the new date isn't known.

I must say that I'm extremely excited about this new information. When I heard about the set back in July at the VSDA (Video Software Dealer's Association) show, I knew the 3 discs couldn't hold all the episodes and any substantial value added material, and I was a bit bummed. NewsRadio is a show I really want to own on DVD, so the delay of the set in order to make it better is welcomed. Columbia TriStar, and Paul Simms, deserve pats on the back for doing the right thing.

Hopefully we can get in touch with Paul Simms and find out what he has planned for the set.

I know it's bad etiquette to register just to post once, but I also know that some of you TV Barnfolk are NewsRadio fans, so I hope you'll forgive me.

As most of you know, the first two seasons of NewsRadio were due to be released on DVD in February. The release date has been delayed, but I have it on good authority that this is a positive thing.

From the Grand Poobah himself: "The DVD was originally scheduled to be released by Sony in February 2004. However, due to a clerical error of some kind, no one at Sony told me about this. The February release was to have been a bare-bones, just-the-episodes package, which was
disappointing, as I'd always planned on trying to put together a commentary-laden, extra-features-filled DVD release -- and a February release wouldn't give us enough time to do that. Fortunately, the people at Sony turned out to be good guys, and once we discussed it, they found a way to delay the DVDs until we could put together something special."

The really cool part is that your suggestions could become part of the final product! I've been instructed to collect these suggestions, so e-mail them over to newsradionews@h.... (Please put "NewsRadio" somewhere in the subject line.)

"Here are some of the things we're considering:
-- Commentary on the episodes by cast members, writers, a director or two, and any other interesting people I can think of. Any ideas?
-- Behind-the-scenes footage (although I think I have more behind the scenes footage from Seasons 3+4)
-- End of the season "Blooper Reels."
-- Maybe -- even though I always find it a little difficult to read text on a TV screen -- a few first drafts of scripts, and then middle drafts, and then shooting drafts, and then "as-broadcast" drafts. So that people who are interested in that sort of thing can see how -- and how much --
the scripts changed over the course of a week.
-- If I can locate them (and the relevant parties aren't too embarassed by them) a few of the original audition tapes."

Forward this message to anybody who might be interested in getting their 2 cents in, or just wants to know why they won't be getting their DVDs in February. Thanks, everybody!

Happy Holidays from the NewsRadio Newsletter. :)
