Useful spells for your everyday (real) life

Endure Elements -- I live in Canada, it can get cold and it can get bloody hot. Would also be a nice boon for the tonne of homeless people I see shivering in the winter.

Power word, Stun -- Make it really easy to break up fights and such.

Zone of truth -- Have some fun with politicians in public.

Augury -- Priceless, absolutely priceless.

Create food & water -- Who actually likes going to the grocer?

Amateurs...

Okay, there have been some good ones—I'll admit—but how 'bout these for mundane applications of magic:

Detect Posion: Is it okay to eat that beef? We haven't cooked it and it's been in the fridge for a week.

Mage Hand: Handling hot pots and reaching the top shelf of the pantry.

Mending: Sewing buttons and darning socks (not that anyone darns socks anymore!)

Open/Close: Get the door when you have arm-loads of groceries.

Alarm: Know when kids sneak out of bed/house (or when they get in at night for older kids)...or even when they get too close to the street while playing.

Sleep: EVERY parent wants this for their kids.

Floating Disk: For shopping/chores

Erase: Takes scribbles off of walls (can you tell I have two kids yet?)

Waterbreathing: Don't worry if the Lifeguard's paying attention or not.

Time Stop: Catch the bus or just take a break.

I'm an emergency services dispatcher (911) so here's my list:

Command : Listen! (For those people who won't shut up or answer my questions when I ask them)

Comprehend Languages or Tongues : kinda obvious

Remove Fear : to get people to calm down so they will listen to instructions

Find the Path and Locate : for people who don't know where the hell they are and how to get there

People have covered this one before, but: presdigitation, for all that minor magics.

The ability boosters would be a drug. I just need to think a little more clearly, or I need to be just a little bit stronger.

Summon Monster is another fair idea. It allows to partially replicate other spell effects.

Foresight. What the spell actually grants would be very useful, much more then is carried thru in the rules.

Fabricate. Carry your will into physical being. Same thing holds true for the minor and major creation spells.

I know locate object would be extremely useful, on account of I'm always losing things, but it's already been mentioned.

I'm sure I'll come up with more, and I'm sure you'll hear about them.

Hmm... good question.

Waterbreathing: I own a pool. Go figure. Also a nice way to make sure any pets who get in the pool aren't doomed if they can't swim.

Control Weather: Make every day a snow day! (even in south Texas....)

Call Lightning: Be an interesting way to end any argument where the other person says, "And may God strike me down if. . . ."

Control Water: No more worries about floods.

Animal Freindship: No more worries about wild animals or loose, badly-raised pit bulls.

Speak with Animals: Find out how your pet really feels about you. Also a way to find out if they're sick. And, it's a means to be able to reunite lost critters with the people who love them.

Comprehend Languages and Tongues: I live in south Texas. `Nuff said. Besides, I'd really like to travel & not rely on interpreters.

Detect Magic: Way to know who else may be spellcasting out there.

Permanency: To eliminate having to cast waterbreathing, speak with animals, comprehend languages, etc. on myself and others.

A version of Sleep I can cast on myself so that insomnia is finally not a problem. (He says at almost 3am.)

A version of Charm Person or the like which works over the telephone so when telemarketers call I can convince them to find a new line of work.

For that matter a version of Protection from Evil which works against spammers.

Silence for when someone is playing their car stereo too loudly.

A combination of Scrying and Dominate Person so I can force television network executives to quit cancelling all of my favorite shows.

Mage Hand for fetching snacks, drinks, and misplaced remote controls while watching all the good TV I have to chose from as a result of my influence on the Networks.

Cure Blindness so I can finally be 20/20 without glassess.

Calm Emotions usable on myself for when I want to drive 55 and everyone in front of me wants to drive 35. Disintegrate for when the Calm Emotions wears off and they're still doing 35.

Bull's Strength for moving heavy stuff, Cat's Grace for playing action type computer/video games, and Endurance for hiking.

Continual Flame to save on the electric bill.

Ventriloquism/Shocking Grasp/Magic Mouth/Misc. Illusions - because April Fool's Day only comes once a year and I wanna make the most of it.

Diminish Plants for easier gardening.

Enthrall, Enlarge, Glibness and others for improved social interaction.

Fireball just because it's cool...

Heroes Feats for parties.

Drawmij's Instant Summon for the object you always forget before going out.

Read Magic for the japanese instruction of the latest electronic device you just bought.

And finally something like a Detect Self for hangovers after the Heroes' Feast.
