Usefulness of a Dragon Disciple

Really want feedback on the ragemage dragon disciple combo. Heard that Caliban made a smackdown with these two PrC's. What would such a smack down entail?

I don't know, I didn't make the smackdwon. Maybe it was Caliber?

I don'th think you want the Rage Mage and the Dragon Disciple in the same character. Each gets it's power from a different path.

I made a smackdown using Dragon Disciple as a straight fighter. Only really utilized the larger size, didn't take advantage of reach or any of the other modifiers.

What little discussion of the Dwarven Dragon of Death smackdown there was can be found here.

Since then, I've realized that I forgot to halve the Str damage bonus for the off hand. Need to adjust for that.

I'm still having a little trouble topping the 200 damage mark. I need a little bit of a damage boost and haven't figured out a really good way to do it. Would probably help if I had the Sword & Fist splatbook.

As for if the Dragon Disciple is any good, a +8 Str adjustment is impressive. Add in that as a large creature you get reach and it is even more fun. Ignore the spell capability, spells are not that classes strong point. Without a boost to caster level, you just can't keep up with the pure spellcasters.

I had not realized that the Sage had ruled that you get the changes for enlargement on top of the ones already listed in the PrC. Not sure if I like that.

Is this part of errate or the FAQ yet?

Reach is very useful, and depending on how you play it the sage has said that you also get the huge stat increase from going from medium size to large size.

I thought the Sage had back tracked on the stat increases due to size. If the 'search' mechanism was up and running we probably find the previous threads to this question.

Ysgarran.

p.s.
I might go looking and post what I find later...

Edit:
Yep, it looks like the sage did retract the stat increase due to size:

Does the official errata say anything about this?

That might have happened, I don't remeber. What I do remeber is that many people talked back and forth about if the bonuses for size increases should be part of the class. I remeber the Sage saying they did. He might have back tracked at some point, I didn't pay attention to the thread after a while.

The sage did say that the class doesn't grant a +8 str at level 5 just for leveling up.

The whole reason for taking 5 levels of the class is to get size large and wings. You can take a lot of feats that you couldn't before that are devastating. For example: fly-by attack (with reach), large and in-charge, and a large weapon in one hand.

A dual weilding DD with a mercurial greatsword and a longsword, 10' reach and combat reflexes is a scarey opponent.

Actually, 10' reach is NOT one of the abilities granted by the enlargement effect at 5th level. According to the (2nd) ruling by the sage, you only gain the effects listed in the class description: adjusted claw and bite damage and -1 to AC and attacks. All-in-all, more of a penalty than a benefit, considering the difficulties of outfitting a large character.

Where did the Sage say it didn't give reach? I didn't see it in the quoted thread.

Seems like a pretty strange ruling considering that on PHB pg 131 it makes it clear that this is part of being a Large (tall) creature. See Table 8-7, Creature Size and Scale.

As a side note, the Dragon Disciple offers some wonderful roleplaying opportunities. In one game I play in, the Dragon Disciple is a Human Cleric of Bahamut who is on a spritual quest to find his Draconic heritage. Very cool.

What is the offical word on the PrC. Because as it reads it says they're size increases an increment, and as stated means it should gain ALL of the benefits and penalties for going up one size catagory.

So what is the offical word, exact quotation or at least a cite would be nice if possible.
