Using a staff while grappled?

So in that case, would the buried-in-concrete example fail due to no line of effect, even though you're casting the spell with no Somatic component, and there's a clear path from the corner of your square to where your opponents are?

Personally, I would think it wouldn't work. Where do you think it would come from?

Everyone's heard of things shooting beams from their eyes. Why not there? Freak your players out and have the beam originate from your mouth. The flavor may say it comes from your hands, but like hyp pointed out, when you're not using your hands to cast the spell it comes from wherever you want as long as it originates from you somewhere.

Of course, if its a staff of Sunbeam.. wouldn't be more appropriate for the beam to initiate at the tip of the staff??

In which case the ray could not strike the grappling vampire as you can't properly aim the staff at it....

I am now going to have a lich cut off his hand, give the hand to a dominated invisible stalker, and cast sunbeam through his hand to catch the party off guard from behind.
