D&D 5E Using "D&D 2024" instead of "5e24"

I think that's a complex jargon to maintain, since "D&D", in my experience, is used to encompass the entire set of games in the family going back to the 1974 release. Heck, I often see "D&D" being used as a placeholder for anything within the family of related games. I mean, if someone said they were running a "D&D game", and used TotV or A5e as the baseline, I certainly wouldn't accuse them of some sort of linguistic bait and switch.
Personally, I think of every (TT)RPG as a Dungeons & Dragons variant. (YMMV!)

I still call it One D&D, in part because at this point I'm only ever discussing the playtest, and in part because I've kind of given up on what they're doing with it so I haven't really talked about it since they gave up the One D&D moniker.

But I will avoid 5e24 because that's 5,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.

Well that is how much they expect you to pay for it... ;)

there are enough partial editions of dnd that it does make sense to refer to them by the year. For example, when I pitch OSE to people I call it 1981 Dnd

But when we say things like "5e24" instead of "D&D 2024" we're giving authority to one company and discouting the incredible work of many others for this wide open hobby.
I don't see this. How are we belittling FGG, AAW, etc when we label a version of the WotC D&D books?
I’m trying to say that we shouldn’t assume 5e == D&D or Hasbro published books. Instead, D&D is D&D and 5e is the superset.
True, but "5E" doesn't even mean anything D&D. It could Runequest or Star Wars of CoC or... even a reboot of Star Frontiers using the D&D 5E ruleset. But D&D also doesn't just mean 5E. It could be Homes, it could be PF, it could be lots of derivative game ssytems.

I don't know, it seems to be more precision is better than less. And since people are going to want something quick and easy, I think 5e24 is going to be what's used. I still don't see a reason to fight it.
