Many SCA fighters can shuck a shield in 2 seconds. Less than a full action, I'd say, but not much. Stowing it on the back takes much longer.

And this could take even more time in the chaos of a real battle where your life is threatened.

Fencers can usually ditch a buckler safely out of the combat in the same time. Restrapping it to it's buckle on the belt takes both hands and about 5 seconds.

Bucklers are very different from shields in that they are usually gripped by the fist, not strapped to your forearm.

Bucklers are very different from shields in that they are usually gripped by the fist, not strapped to your forearm.

The strapping isn't usually tight to the forearm, and the hand is usually holding a handle or strap not unlike those on a buckler. To shuck the shield, most of them simply let go while swinging downward. A few have to pop a strap. And it often takes a second shake to clear the gauntlet. It's really not long at all. 2 sec is the high end of it for most, and assumes the gauntlet is kept on and catches on the strap.
