D&D 3E/3.5 v4: Challenge Ratings pdf (3.5 compatible)

Hi kreynolds mate! :)

It doesn't though. There are (I think) 376 wizard spells in the PH, which means it rates at 4.5684/level.

Its possible I rated spellcasting prior to 3.5? How many Wizard spells in 3.0 I wonder, surely less?

Maybe that is the formula...?

I'm not sure how many total spells there are in the PH, so I can't say. I'll look into it.

But, just to be sure, say a classes spell list represented 10% of the possible spells...how would you work that into the formula exactly?

To be honest I am not sure. I still can't remember how I worked this out to begin with.

I'm thinking maybe I used the base spell-like abilities from the CR portion. So it would be 0.0005/spell-level?

lvl 0: 16
lvl 1: 42
lvl 2: 41
lvl 3: 37
lvl 4: 38
lvl 5: 39
lvl 6: 35
lvl 7: 28
lvl 8: 26
lvl 9: 22

total: 324

52 less than 3.5 :)

See my previous post for how the formula works out.

By "/spell-level", do you mean maximum level of spells?

Hello Upper_Krust,
The more I use this, the more I like it.

Have you given thought to how integrated levels of Psion, PsiWarrior, Soulblade or Wilder might be measured?

I'm guessing that Psion could be ballparked as equal to Wiz/Sor, but the others don't have as good a comparison.

Well glad to hear people are getting a lot out of it.

Well to be honest I haven't but they couldn't be too hard to work out.

I must say though I am not familiar with the Soulblade or the Wilder (Prestige Classes from the Psionics 3.5 I presume? I don't have that book as yet.)

Looking over the Psion it does indeed seem fairly similar to the Wizard or Sorceror, the Psychic Warrior does seem slightly better than a Fighter, but I would have to investigate that further. The benefit of Psionic Modes is ambiguous.

This is something I'll probably delve into more when I get the website uploaded.

I was thinking of writing some articles about making extreme classes (and Prestige Classes) and still keeping it balanced. Things like characters with d20 hit points or loads of feats or even a balanced Mystic Theurge and so forth.

Also I have been thinking that Prestige Classes should be more powerful than normal classes and Epic Prestige Classes should be slightly more power than regular prestige classes. But as yet I am still working out the 'sweet spots'.

Ah yes, I was referring to the 3.5 Psionics (aka the XPH). In that book the Wilder and Soulblade are core classes. On the good news side for analysis, there no longer are psionic modes. I think it should be possible to treat psionic powers as spells pretty easily in that since, though the points-vs-slots would still be different. Heck, the points approach might make for easier analysis.

Off the top of my head, I'm guessing I could treat the Psionic Warrior somewhere on the level of integrated Bard levels - not a big punch since all we're talking about there is the "spellcasting" capability.

Looking forward to hear how publication is going!

Traps?

Halloo U_K,

I was just going thru the adventure I'm going to be running this weekend using your system and I realized that I couldn't figure out how to use your system with regards to traps (or am I missing it?). Someone, please help me solve this!

Traps have CRs just like creatures. What's the problem? Treat it as a single-creature encounter of the apprpriate CR.

Frankly, as the DMG caps trap CR at 10, there's not much you'd need to do with core traps using U_K's 'designed for really high levels' system, although it's certainly possible.

I realize that they have CRs. What I was asking was, if I'm using this system for characters and monsters, then how do I apply this system to traps? Do I just take the listed CR and apply it to the EL table or what?

Sure, if encountered alone. It the trap is encountered with a monster then treat it as an encounter with several creatures (probably of differing CRs).
