Vampire question

Ok, in the rules they say: Undeads are destroyed if brought down to 0 hp. At the vampires desc they say: Vampires turn into gaseous form at 0 hp and blabla.

Question: What happens to Vampires below 0hp? Dead? Ehm, sure dead, but destroyed? If not, when are they destroyed? I mean, they float away with gaseous form, but what happens if the party wizard wastes them with a fireball?

MM p.222 under "Slaying a Vampire"

Simply reducing a vampire's hit points to 0 or below incapacitates but does not destroy it.

It also describes how to destroy a vampire.

If the party wizard wastes it with a fireball while it is gaseous, it will only take it longer time to heal.

Incapacitated
Characters who are incapacitated are treated as helpless.

So a Vampire at or below 0 hit points is essentially helpless, but in gaseous form, and must return to it's coffin for R&R. Enter heroes who slay vampire. Finis.
