Vampires

Since I am running Heart of Nightfang Spire tomorrow (so quick answers would be nice :D) I was wondering if anyone could give me some rules for how Vampires and Vampire Spawn react to things like:

Mirrors
Garlic
Holy Symbols

The description of the beast more or lest simply says they are repelled, but I have no idea exactly how I should let that work.

Any help? Should I move this to House Rules?

If its that unclear, I would treat it as if those items generated a "protection from evil" type are of effect maybe 30' out from the item in question.

I have actually played it as garlic basically grants the effects of protection for evil for the character that is wearing it, but only the can't use natural attacks on that character part of the spell, nothing else. As for mirrors, well they cast no reflection so what's it matter? They aren't vulnerable to them in any way. And holy symbols don't really do much unless ya try to turn em. Would they touch em, not if they can't help it, but it won't stop them from touching a holy symbol or touching someone carrying a holy symbol.

Depending on what type of DM you are, there are different ways to approach this. You can either go for the "literal" translation or the "spirit" of the text.

For instance, I would assume that a "literal" translation of being "repelled", could mean that the vampire simply has an aversion to said item. That being, the vampire suffers no actually game mechanic affect, just that the vampire feels uncomfortable in its presence.

I am not sure what the "spirit" of the text would be.

This is just my own interpretation.

You could, perhaps, consider the description of a "repelled creature" in the spell Repulsion for a game mechanic.

I figured the actual text might help some of you out.

Vampiers cannot tolerate the strong odor of garlic and will not enter an area laced with it. Similarly, they recoil from a mirror or a strongly presented, holy symbol. These things don't harm the vampire - they merely keep it away.

I like the idea of them not using their natural attacks against someone with said items, assuming he is brandishing them strongly.

Anyone want to comment on whether that should be a Standard Action or a MEA?
