Vegetarians and the Single Man

Depends on where the fish come from. Wild fish are of course the worst for this, but hatchery/farmed fish are generally fine.

Beans and other legumes are great for protein. Of course soy/tofu is excellent. She might or might not have a problem with cheese, milk and eggs.

she is still at the beginners stage. In fact, she asked me to help her determine what constitutes a vegetarian. :)

She drinks milk, apparently life without milk is terrifying to her. She will eat seafood, but no other meats, including poultry. She is not sure about eggs yet.

In fact, we had sushi the day she told me this.

The decision was born out of her hypersensitivty to health, so I should mention that she avoids carbs on a regular basis, prefers high protein and low fat. She is not easy to please.

substitute eggplant or tofu for meat in anything you would normally cook OR just point out those pointy teeth in her mouth, and what they were designed for :)

If it helps, tell her that most commercially sold eggs are not fertalized. They would never and could never grow into chicks, so it's not like she's contributing to the killing of potential chickens if she eats eggs. Of course, the choloresterol isn't that good...

Make sure she knows what she's doing with the low-carb diet. It's very easy to do such diets unhealthily.

If she was hypersensitive to health she wouldn't become a vegetarian. :) Also as a vegetarian she's going to be eating primarily carbs (and fat if she's a loose vegetarian), so she's going to have to give up the Atkins approach.

Also, as Davelozzi said, I hope she's happy enough eating a salad while you eat real food, like a hamburger. It's not fair for her to expect you to adopt her dietary habits, especially since they aren't morally motivated (not that being vegetarian is a moral act, but some think it is).

Wasn't there news recently about the dangers of the Atkins diet? So that's out, too.

Me, I'll eat whatever I darn well please. With the genetic heritage I've got, I don't expect to live to retirement age anyway, so what the heck? :D

I'm trying to slowly help her dietary concerns. She tends to go to extremes. She is very image conscious, and though she recognizes she is attractive, she wishes to perfect it. This is her one fault I think, because she takes it so far. I'm trying to encourage her, but I do also want to help be sure that she gets proper nutrition. I did tell her about the carbs, so that is one thing I really need help with. With her running, and generally fast metabolism I think the Atkins diet was a mistake to begin with.
