Vermin Query

OK, going through a few of the books i have lying around.

first of all, potential candidates from AC9 Creature Catalogue:

(first of all, i want to comment. this book precursors the 3E creature types in a lot of ways. you have sections for Animals, Conjurations (magical and other planar), Humanoids, Lowlife (plans, bugs, worms, and goos), Monsters (and other fantastical creatures), and Undead. that also makes it easy to find when you're looking for something in particular. :) anyway, carrying on...)

Giant Amoeba
Herex
Giant Jellyfish
Leviathan
Masher
Red Worm
Slime Worm
Giant Hunting Spider, Giant Sand Spider, Giant Shroud Spider, Huge Wood Spider
Steam Weevil

naturally, these like some creatures listed above, could wind up in other categories (Animal, Magical Beast, Aberration), but we can always decide that later before the query is finalized. :)

more to come, shortly...

Monstrous Manual

Beetle, Giant (bombardier, stag)
Centipede (tunnel worm)
Crustacean, Giant
Gloomwing, tenebrous worm
Insect (see p 204)
Insect Swarm (velvet ants, grasshoppers & locusts)
Leech (giant, throat, swarm)
Spider (various)
Urchin
Worm (bookworm, rot grub)

it's getting obvious, like with the plant and fey queries, that there is too much volume to cover in a single article. we'll need a method for narrowing these down and selecting which of these we really want to work on.

MC Annuals

One:
Greelox
Lock Lurker
Parasite (bloodring, goldbug, wizard lice, vilirij)
Pasari-niml
Spider, brain

Two:
Jellyfish, Giant (Portugese Man-o-War)
Kalin
Wall-walker
Webbird
Wraith-spider

Three:
Beetle (stink)
Dreamweaver

Four:
Coral (brain coral, coral worm)
Sea Worm (echyan)
Starfish, giant (giant sunstar)
Worm, lukhorn
Wyste (Far Realm)

another idea i had for organizing them would be to do as i did for the plant and fey queries, and come up with different vermin-related "themes" that they fit into.

PSMC2:
Spider, Hook

Mystara MC:
Dragonfly (aka, dragons mixed with insects)
Hivebrood
Jellyfish, giant (marauder, death's head, galley)
Spider-kin (planar spider)
Worm (great annelid, caecillia, frynsaca)

Al-Qadim MC:
Mason-wasp, giant

Dark Sun MC12:
Antloid, Desert
Beetle, Agony
Floater
Insect Swarm, Athasian (locusts, mini-kanks)
Kank, wild
Megapede
Pulp Bee
Scrab
Sink Worm
Spider, Crystal

a little bit more, and then i've done about all i want to do today...

Ravenloft MC3:
Beetle, Scarab
Carrion Stalker
Fleas of Madness
Head Hunter
Leech, Magical
Leech, Psionic
Insectoid (giant ant, giant tick, stag beetle) - p 101
Virus (various)

OK, that's it - i'm taking a break. :)

OK, the rest of the Monstrous Compendiums...

FR (MC3):
none

DL (MC4):
Anemone, Giant
Horax
Skrit
Spider (of Krynn)

GH (MC5):
Aspis
Dragonfly, giant
Snail (flail, sea)

KT (MC6):
Centipede, Spirit
Goblin Spider
Jishin Mushi

SJ - will get to those in a bit

FR (MC11)
Gloomwing (moth)
Haun
Haundar
Hendar
Ring-worm

FF (MC14)
Flawder
Fyrefly
Pernicon

SJ (MC7):
Jammer Leech
Mortiss
Spider, Asteroid
Syllix

SJ (MC9):
Buzzjewel
Fal
Feesu
Gossamer
Zurchin

and that's really about all i want to do with that. whew! *passes out*

OK, here are some summaries of the creatures we came up with in this thread, as well as a few more. :) It took us some time to put this together, as you might imagine.

Now would be the time to weed out the ones we definitely don’t want, to better compare the ones we would rather consider. Things that need to go away include: creatures that would definitely be better as another type (Magical Beast, Aberration, etc), things that only have the LVT (“Lazy Vermin Trick”, aka poison) and not much else going for them, things that are just too similar to something already in the game, anything that would not be worthwhile to convert into modern game mechanics, and anything that’s flat out not interesting.

That should, hopefully, leave us with the more interesting, unique, and usable vermin which to submit. We'd also like to get a nice CR range, with some simple vermin, swarms, complex and intelligent creatures, with a wide variety of abilities.

If you need more information on any of these to make a better judgment, just say so. :) Likewise, if you know of something in the creature’s original description that bears mentioning, let us know as well.
