Very basic question regarding skill points...

Hi everyone --

Suppose I have a bard (for example) with 13 INT, giving her 5 skill points per level. At 4th level, she raises her INT to 14, thereby gaining another skill point per level. So, at 4th level, does she have 5 or 6 skill points to spend? My inclination, based upon reading the PHB, is that her 4th level skill points remain at 5, but increase to 6 at 5th level, since her INT needs to have been increased for a certain period of time for its effects on skill points to occur.

Have I just missed an explicit ruling on this matter somewhere?

Thanks,

By the rules, you have it right. IMC though I allow the extra skill point at fourth. Makes the PCs happy and I have yet to see a skill point distrupt the balance of my game.:D

Incorrect Croithan.

PHB 10, under the example for raising Int, it states that the character recieves the extra skill point on the level that the modifier raises (4th in the example).

Doh! I stand (sit) corrected. In my defense I'm at least playing by the rules even though I had the ruling wrong. See, I'm smart enough to realease when a rule should be changed since they had it they way I changed it to. Is that enough BS in my own defense or will I need more to fix this stupidity that is me? :D

Actually, just admitting you were wrong, and being receptive to a different ruling was already enough to give you extra points in everyone's eyes :-)

Unfortunately, that's in direct conflict with the detailed section later in the book - sorry, I don't have it in front of me, so no page reference - detailing the specific order in which you do the various things, and buying skills comes before raising attributes.

Personally, I also go with the example on page 10, but the "official" word is that it doesn't kick in until the next level.

Also is the character human? I seem to recall humans get +1 more per level so that at 4th level you will have +4 extra too. So at 1st she gets 24 skill points then at 2nd and 3rd level get 6, then at 4th (with ability raise) she gets 7 for a total of...42 if my math is correct.
