Video Game Dungeons

Many years ago, I did play in games run by a DM/GM that everything was lifted from pop culture. We’d adventure through something from the Curse of the Azure Bonds PC game, something from the Shannara series, Robocop 2, and so on. We had fun, but after a while it got old.

That's my fear. I think this sort of technique is great for a one-shot or a single specialty session in a longer campaign. If it becomes the whole game though.... Like you said, I could imagine that getting old in a hurry.

Pretty much. I mean, at the time our gaming tastes weren’t that sophisticated, and even then we knew that it was a problem that he kept doing that sort of thing for every game.

I seen computer dungeon designs ripped off, tourist maps ripped off, high school, college, military dorms ripped off, and famous landmarks. I have no problem with this idea.

I copied out a Zelda castle from the original game as a dungeon for my son's first try at D&D. He figured out the floor plan after a bit, but all the monsters were new to him.
The "Skeleton Dragon" in the Big Boss room spitting a stream of knuckle bones at him (breath weapon) was completely unexpected.
