Visiting Manhattan in a little over a week.

Meant to post that a week ago :)
 Well, at least you spared us for a week. ;)

Hey, question... I was told that in New York you should not keep your money in your back pocket. Moreover, don't wear a backpack on your back.

So, what, if I carry anything with me I have to have a backpack worn backwards (frontwards?). Does everyone go around New York with a backpack on their belly? If I have shopping bags, do I have to hold them against my chest?

Yes, keep your wallet in your FRONT pocket. There are pickpocket on the subway and in crowded places popular with tourists like Times Square. Same with cell phones, iPods and other valuables.

As for backpacks, two reasons not to wear them especially on your back are those same pickpockets will slit them open to try and find something of value, and two, if you aren't used to wearing them on a crowded subway, you are bound to hit someone in the head with one. :)

Another tip: when going down an escalator with luggage trailing behind you, keep an eye on your bag. I've seen pickpockets zip things open looking for stuff while the owner was facing front. At that point I usually yell and smack them with my umbrella and they scatter like the cockroaches they are.

Don't let this alarm you though. New York is still one of the safest cities in the country now. We all walk the the streets and ride the subway carrying laptops, iPods and shopping bags just like everywhere else. Even backpacks. The key is, like it is everywhere else, to keep your wits about you and be aware of your environment.

And to put another longstanding stereotype to rest, Harlem is one of the safest communities in Manhattan. Feel free to go to Harlem, enjoy some delicious soul food, gospel choirs or jazz, and know that you are not in anything like downtown Beirut. It's a wonderful part of the New York City experience that gets overlooked because of preconceived notions people have before they actually get there.

Hm. In this part of the world, at least, some men have some pretty hefty wallets. They're uncomfortable to wear in the front pocket (mine's not that big, but still uncomfortable).

Someone mentioned to me, "Hey, try a fannypack" and the first thing that came to my head was, "Guh! Fashion faux-pas! That's so 80s!"

I was ashamed of myself for that thought.

So, if I wear a backpack, wear it the wrong way. Otherwise, keep stuff in my front pocket (while keeping stuff in it to a minimum... which shouldn't be tough anyway since most of my stuff is only useful in Houston).

Thanks for the tips! I'm really curious to try out Harlem, especially if there's more than soul food (we have good soul food in Houston, but it's not my cup of tea...)

You can wear your backpack normally, just don't keep anything of real value in the front pockets. :)

Harlem:

The Studio Museum in Harlem features African American art:

The Riverside Church is an absolutely beautiful piece of architecture to walk through:

Plus, if you wear it backwards, everyone will know that you are a tourist. :p

Well worth it, especially if you go up in the bell tower and enjoy the view from the top. Stunning.

Last thanksgiving they had a pumpkin cheesecake. Personally, I hate pumpkin pie, but the pumpkin cheese cake was absolutely AMAZING.

 Good point. I'll take that as another vote for "keep things in front pocket(s)"

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone contributed to this thread. I had an amazing time in New York! I spent a little time in Brooklyn (2 hours?) and a little time in Staten Island (15 minutes?), but nothing compares to Manhattan. :D

Excellent! That's what we like to hear. :)

Sorry I wasn't around to get a chance to meet you in person. Memorial Day weekend is a tough one with family obligations etc.

Anyhow, glad you had fun, and hope to meet you next time!
