Vitality Point System vs Weapon Damage?

swordsmasher

First Post
So, I've been running a campaign for about three weeks now using this system, and i discovered one thing. Everyone uses the greatsword in this system, because it is by far the most powerful and deadly weapon in the game.

In the standard hit poin rules, the greataxe does 1d12 damage, but on a crit it deals 3d12 damage. In the VP/WP system it merely deals 1d12 points of damage to the targets Wound Points.

So in the VP/WP system, the Greatsword outshines every other weapon in the game (not even gonna mention the rapier!).

I want to switch back to the HP system to make the weapons more diverse again, but my players are against this. My question is, is there a way to make certain weapons worth using again?

One thing that I experimented with was the following...

Weapons' critical modifiers are reduced by one and the damage goes straight to WPs.

So, a greatsword does 2d6+strength*1.5 damage to wounds on a 19-20. A greataxe does (1d12+strength*1.5)*2 damage to wounds on a 20. A heavy pick does (1d8+strength)*3 damage to wounds on a 20.

It turned out to be waaaaay to randomly deadly to PCs and NPCs/monsters alike.

Have them play a d20 Modern game that uses a modified HP system. I would recommend you set their Threshold at 10 + Con modifier (instead of using Con score as value).
