Interesting.

Nearly all the people who posted a reply to this thread, voted for something other than red dragon, although the non-replying voters have obviously voting for the red dragon.

At the time of this writing, it has a huge lead!
 





I refuse to accept the possibility that the best D&D mascot of all time is not included in this poll.

I had to go with red dragon. When I think "D&D" in broad terms, that's the image that comes to mind first. Also, "dragons of color" seems to be a D&D-only phenomenon, so the inverse is also true. Flipping through the MM, other choices I would have considered are: lich (not likely, but possible), Githyanki, or bulette.

Mascots don't have to be cute, otherwise sports would be populated with the Toy Poodles, the Calico kittens, and the Parakeets instead of the Vikings, Buccaneers, and Braves. Those are nice war-like mascots.

I'll never understand the allure of the beholder. It's an absurd monster, like a fleshy, psychotic softball with mushrooms growing on it. Maybe if D&D were more of a dark comedy, like a fantasy Paranoia.
