This is a good point, but mascots are generally not devoid of context -- it'd be a red dragon in an ad for a D&D book, or...dancing around at conventions...and stuff. ;)

As much as part of me really wants to say beholder, I went with the red dragon. It's not uniquely a D&D creation, but it's half of the name and it's already been on tons of D&D stuff over the years.
 



Red Dragon. Kobolds are already covered by Kobolds Ate My Baby.

And a red dragon can be cute and cuddly... well, when they're not planning the destruction of the world.
