If you showed anybody who didn't play (or even someone who did) a picture of a red dragon they wouldn't necesserily think d&d, therefore they shouldn't be the mascot.

This is a good point, but mascots are generally not devoid of context -- it'd be a red dragon in an ad for a D&D book, or...dancing around at conventions...and stuff.

As much as part of me really wants to say beholder, I went with the red dragon. It's not uniquely a D&D creation, but it's half of the name and it's already been on tons of D&D stuff over the years.
