To be honest, of them, I find the MM to be clearly the best.

But that's only because it has the clearest art. The others kinda have this partially-faded look to them that doesn't do them any favors.

That said, totally? I'm not really fond of any of them. The art would be okay for inside a book, but on the cover? I don't really see the art as working. Just... the MM is the only one where the art strikes me as matching the book, and even with that one the PHB art strikes me as a better choice for it.

There's something that really appeals to be about the "texture" of the core 3, but I find it stands out most in the PHB, so that's what I had to go with. Though, I think they all look really nice. I'm glad they have much more room for art than the previous edition.

Is it weird that I'm most interested in what the spines of the book look like? I suppose because I will see that often on my bookshelf.

Biggest problem is none show very much of a adventuring party. At most two people are shown with their foe, rather than a party.

The Tiamat one is cropped in WAY too close.

MM's fleeing adventure's face ruins the whole piece IMO. :hmm:

The white dragon on the Horde of the Dragon Queen at least has good detail work on its scales which FAR too many artists get stingy with.

The artist for the PHB cover and the DMG cover displayed the uncropped covers on his website.

You certainly get a better sense of the scene with the uncropped versions.

The non-cropped art is much better looking I think. I'll have to search for the rest of it now.

I love the menacing-looking Beholder; I voted the MM. I like the Starter Set's nod to the boxes of yesteryear, but the PHB, DMB, and Tyrrany of Dragons adventures don't do it for me. They just seem removed from what I imagine in my head. :/

computer art computer art...meh...seems to me after the big flop with 4th...they would get down to business and do some truly great covers...these...meh, not so much. the type is rather bland...and to me the styles have no cohesion whatsoever. To make matters worse I saw a few of the interior art pieces for these books...*Shakes head* completely horrid..the Warlock art for it's descript is hideous looking...not some teeny flower puff girl art 3rd grade art project. Then comes the elves art on their descript page...jeesh...it's a wonder WETA doesn't sue WOTC for plagiarism. It's almost a direct copy of Rivendell from the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies, and that is the Art Directors fault plain and simple. Please take in mind I haven't seen all the art inside, and I'm sure well, hoping there are some truly great pieces in there.
For me this hasn't tooted my horn or made me excited. I will most likely only peruse these books in the book store and get a chuckle. They won't get another dime from me. This is just my opinion as well...so it really doesn't matter, but it sure won't make me open my wallet and slide my credit card for a purchase(s).

As the winner of the covers it has to be the Tiamat one...I wanted the beholder, but why in Mystra's name is a street vendor traveling with a dwarf in a dungeon...ugh...*Bangs head on desk* again..Art Directors fault..... Even the Tiamat one is not that great...it's what I call unfinished computer art..that tries to pass as Fine Art. I'm really looking forward to getting my chuckle next week at the book store.
