How about a ranged touch to place the wall of fire in the precise spot? If it misses then the wall is in front of the arrow slits (still damaging the giants right there, but not behind the wall).

You normally don't need the touch attack (the one exception I can think about is fireball due to the bead). I'd personally not suggest the touch attack because it's nontrivial to come up with an AC (it's an AC not to hit, which is opposite in concept to AC) and it's counterintuitive to that type of spell anyway. Note that even if the hallway were shrouded in thick fog (total concealment), it would not affect the wall of fire one iota (except that maybe you don't know if you have line of effect). It may affect the fireball, though.
