wall(s) of fire

If I’m caught between two walls of fire cast by two different wizards do I take 2d4 or 2 x 2d4 ? I should think that 2 x 2d4 would be right, but if that is the case, why would a person caught in a ring-shaped one only take 2d4 and not say 2d4 x 3.14 ?

Because the ring is only one spell effect which never stacks with itself, whereas two Wall of Fire spells each deal damage separately.

You might look at it this way:

The amount of heat, which is the source of your damage, is unchanged in teh cylinder shaped wall of fire.

In the case of the two seperate Walls the amount of heat, damage source, has doubled and therefore the damage would also double.
