War of the Worlds

Cool thread.

I watched plenty of Sliders without being a rabid fan, know of Roswell (but never watched it since I expected the over-angst of teenage cast), but never heard of Tracker. Is it new (haven't kept up this and last season, or maybe it's short for something I would recognize. But at this moment I have no clue -- whazzat?

I remember the War of the World TV series, wish it had made it more than a season (or two?), and that's what I thought of immediately from the initial post - possible effects if it had happened, but somehow the recounting had been mythologized and sterilized. Still the tech is available (deep in government installations a la X-files "truth") and the revivers "want it back".

I also thought of "They Live". Cool premise and somewhat freaky scenario for most of the movie. The brainwashing advertisements, the invisible floaters that kept track of the population, the quick communication by the aliens when they realized someone was seeing them for what they were. Unfortunately, the sheer ugliness of the aliens who evidently were "human enough" anotomically-wise and the incredibly poorly defended central hub that the protagonist just happens to uncover and destroy and thereby blow the cover off the whole thing quite ruined it, though. Still, with slight modifications I think it could be worked into a great Modern/pseudo-future "Dark Matter" setting-like intrigue.

If you want the aliens blatent, why not rip off the good things from the V movie and TV series? I hear the sequel (shudder) has them confined to one section of the earth (the equator?) where that red bioagent can't reach or affect them. They seem benevolent to the majority and only say they want water, but IIRC their true intent was more along the lines of Twilight Zones "To Serve Man" episode.

Ah, great memories (mostly).

I didn't want to insert into that developing thread with the specific ships and such for War of the Worlds, but thanks for the info on the tripod walkers. Now a certain British Tripod TV show that I caught many moons back (perhaps from a Canadian station) makes sense as to who the aliens actually are. That's what I get for never actually reading the book. Thanks!

This thread is totally cool. My players have a TARDIS, so I plan on sending them to a Tripod-dominated alternate timeline in the second season of our campaign. And this info is perfect! Thanks!

More source material for a world taken over by the Martians, if no one has mentioned it: The White Mountains, The City of Gold and Lead, and The Pool of Fire by John Christopher. Yes, they are for "teens," but the books are still great (and are the source of the BBC "Tripods" series, which I loved as a kid).

Hey...how's the Martian Invasion campaign going?

Methinks a game based in modern times, but in a timeline in which the events of either Wells' novel or the 1953 version happened, along with recovery of Martian technology and weaponry, would be rather nifty. Maybe with genetically engineered critters made from preserved Martians mentioned in Wells' book.

Alternately, a D20 past game (when it comes out) set back during the invasion would be cool, too.
You might check out this book from Gold Rush:

http://www.goldrushgames.com/wotw.html

It's set in the time of the novel, but might come in handy. It's statted for d20 (3.0, I believe) and Action! System.

Another thing to consider are other goings-on during the 50's:

- Monster Movies - How about a subjugate race of interstellar megamonsters ala Godzilla/Mothra/etc.

- The beginnings of the toy industry... every major TV show had licensed toys. Could the Martians use Commando Cody's(TM) Ray Gun to brainwash kids?

- Can't think of anything else...

I've been thinking about picking up a copy of Gold Rush Games Action! War of the Worlds book. Has anyone taken a look at it yet...and if so, is it worth picking up?

BTW the book also contains the original book by H.G. wells in it's entirety.

If you're looking to play D20, save your money and just download the novel from the gutenberg project. While the GRG book is called "dual system", everything got statted out for Action!, while maybe 1/3 of it got stats for D20. Heck, it looked like it provided more stats for some giant monster game than it did for D20...

Pretty decent. I've been pretty slack, unfortunately, on my end (I was writing something up, and was under a deadline), but I aim to remedy that. There's three characters: we have two good old-fashioned Texas rednecks (one complete with big Bowie knife) and an ex-Nazi saboteur turned demolitions man for a band of survivors. They started out in Los Angeles, a few months after the events of the movie. The Nazi guy was in Pasadena destroying an unopened cylinder, and met up with the two rednecks (refugees from the Pasadena survivors, which had been toasted by the Martians). Now they're on their way back to the L.A. subways and upper sewers, which is where the survivors have holed up.

*dah dah bump*

does anyone know where you can find d20 stats for the Martian machines and Martians? I know GURPS Mars has them for GURPS.

For those of you who might have been following the "Battlefront 2021: The war for america" thread, I'm seriously considering turning it into a War of the Worlds'esque campaign model.

Whoa, talk about thread resurrection. Hey! There's always War of the Worlds the TV series for inspiration.
