Warforged questions

#4. Something interesting I noticed in Races of Eberron. In the Warforged Components section is a component called a tracker mask. It gives the warforged that's wearing it the scent ability. It then goes on to say, "However, many warforged covet this item because it gives them the ability to smell all scents, not merely those of a creature being tracked."

Does the usage of the 'all scents' mean any & all scents, or just those related to a creature for the purposes of the scent ability? :\

This has been discussed a lot on the Eberron forums at Wizards. Indeed, some have cited this passage as an example of why this book isn't "canon."

I think the general concensus is that Warforged can smell (because Keith has stated they can do anything humans can, unless it's been stated they can't), however, it's not necessariy the same "smell" that a human would have. The tracker mask, OTOH, allows them to sense scents as a human does, but better.

Not necessarily the same smell that a human would have? "What the does that mean? Huh? China is here? I don't even know what the Hell that means!" ;)

Seriously, I don't follow you. How can it have a sense of smell, but not like a human's?

I do agree with Keith's sentiments on warforged capabilities. "If we don't mention it, expect it to work like normal." I'm guessing he worked on the front sections of RoE, & not so much the back sections. Although it would've been really nice if the warforged chapter had a part on physiology, like how they speak (what they sound like), etc. Ya' know, a little more into their actual physical composition.

As far as Strength bonuses to Warforged go, I treat the ECS Warforged as the 1st level of the Warforged monster class-- they have those abilities and one class level.

Next level, they can either take another class level or gain +4 Strength.

Maybe they are able to measure the amount of different aerosols and particles suspended in the air and make a profile of these that gives the equivalent of scent (and/or taste since they are very similar and associated with one another) Same with food, it's really just a measure of texture, consistancy, pH, salinity, etc.

They are not robots, but that is how robots smell and taste things. The tracker scent item would impart human-like senses, or bloodhound sense, whatever. Why did data in TNG want to laugh? He could already make the noise of laughing and mimic the physical response at the appropriate time, but he'd rather feel the laughter, something a synthetic can not do normally.

actually i'm pretty sure the warforged doesnt hav a sense of smell. In Race of Eberron, there is a specific item that allows warforges to track enemies by there scent. It goes on to say that it is often coveted by warforges because they don't normally have a sense of smell.

... by any chance?

I've heard it said that:

I always wanted to know if there was EVER a Warforged Raised from the dead.... Since they can, but nobody says they would...
But once again I don't have the book...

Yep. In races of Eberron it mentions in the debate over souls that they can be brought back from te dead, but no warforged has ever reported a memory of the afterlife, thus adding more ambiguity to the debate.

So yes, they have been brought back, but we don't have any particular stories/names.

yeah, but I'd rather play a human at La +1 than a tiefling.
Well, I´d prefer playing a Warfored with Str +2 then a Tiefling at LA +1. :)

I think races need a bit more to compensate for a few ablity bonus and weak spellike abilities. A HD (and the skillpoints, BAB and saves it encompasses) is not to be underestimated.
I´d be more willing to take a higher ECL if I get a few HD with it...
(Warforged + Str+4 + 1 Construct HD and ECL 2, as an example, or maybe ECL 3 if I get the bonus HP by size. But that´s already doubtful...)
