Warforged Variations

Warforged Liches

What I see happening is elder Sorcerers & Wizards capturing Warforged and transfering their minds into their bodies. Even with the 5% spell failure, a warforged dody is tons better than that of a decaying lich. Even better, if the process transforms the Warfoged into an undead (Warforged Lich), they could loose the 5% spell failure aspect.

An entire adventure could be set stoping some ancient wizard from violating an innocent Warforged.

As to the earlier point: I don't see software upgrades either. I see Warforged as metal/wood/plastic containers - an empty vessel that was filled with life and a soul (even as our flesh bodies are). They are alive (unlike Data, who I see as a sentient construct, not a living one).

I believe Keith Baker made a comment somewhere that a warforged couldn't become undead (It might have been only certain types of undead tho.. It's monday and my head hurts, so I am a bit fuzzy on this one). I'll try to hunt the thread down when I have time.

On a related note... Personally, I'd allow a wizard to swap bodies in any magical respect. I agree with Ozmar... 'downloading' makes me think science fiction, and I definitely want to keep this pulp fantasy in my games.

yes he did say they they cannot become undead but this is soul transferance, the warforge body holds the soul of the undead, allowing them to function without being see as the dead.

That gives me an idea. . .

I think a great way to use the Warforged would be as a lich's phylactery. Imagine the look on the PC's face when he realizes that he IS the phylactery they've been looking for. It could be a small box inside the warforged's chest, or maybe the warforged itself.

Someone mentioned Warforge upgrades: I think a great way to do that would be via racial levels. I think the racial levels from Arcana Unearthed would be an excellent addition for all the races, especially the new ones. It really makes sense for the warforged as well, who could spend time and perhaps a little money to have natural qualities enhanced. Perhaps something like:

Full BAB
Good Fort, Poor Ref and Will
2+Int Skills
Skills: ?

1. Increased Slam Dmg, 1d6, +1 Con
2. +1 Str, Reinforced Plating (+1 Armor Bonus)
3. +2 bonus to bull rush/resist bull rush attempts, +1 Con, +1 Str

Warforged Enhancements

One interesting thing about the warforged is that their bodies can be magically enchanted, in effect making them living magic items. So 'upgrades' to a warforged would come in the form of enchantments. If you wanted to give your warforged telescopic vision, you could get someone to turn his eyes into eyes of the eagle. Or you could turn his feet into boots of striding and springing. The possibilites are endless.

Or what if two warforged could just swap personalities/memories? Trade bodies, in other words? What if their personalities/memories could be easily transmitted long distances? So instead of teleporting the whole body, you could just send the personality/memory into a waiting "blank" warforged at the remote location?
They can already do something like this with the Circlet of Preservation. It stores the warforged's personality when the body is damaged, and if you put it on a different warforged they struggle for control of the body, with one ending up in the circlet and the other in the body.

Of course, this is an artifact.
