Warlock w/hideous blow & whip - ?

Oh, you won't do any damage against those foes at all.

IF you hit a legal target for the whip's damage, those extra dice will be lethal. IIRC 3.0 or 3.5 DMG even state energy damage should almost always be lethal.

Eh? Even if the whip doesn't do damage, other effects on it might, if all they require is a hit.

When I played my warlock, I looked at Hideous Blow and thought to myself "why would I take this?"

As EB stands, I can stand up to 60 feet away and once every 6 seconds, have an excellent chance of spanking an opponent with level/2d6 damage. However, I COULD get up close to the opponent and do the same damage in melee, but then he can pound me on the head when he couldn't before.

It's a matter of taste in the character build. I used the Hideous Blow with a multi-classed Warlock/Fighter. It's good for putting a serious melee hurting on somebody when you need it.

And I'm sure a melee warlock build is possible as well.

yeah. this build is an eldritch disciple that buffs a lot for melee.

Get Eldritch Glaive.

Blast Shape, I think it is. Turns EB into a reach weapon and you get a full-attack equivalent (with touch attacks still!) very good for melee warlocks.

Yes it is and IMO it is one seriously powered Invocation (a lesser one).

I would tend to say it is overpowered.

They modify the damage of the whip hit which is still 0 due to the whip's rules.

And from a non rules standpoint, how can the whip get through the armor to hit the victim with the energy?

With the energy. For instance, a lightning whip shocks them, a hideous blow scorches them with eldritch energy, etc. Exactly the same way scorching ray or lightning bolt or eldritch blast does it without a weapon to act as a carrier.
