Warlord for Dummies

Wow, you picked tough classes to do "for dummies" on. Rogues and warlords are pretty much two of the most tactical classes in the game, and both are pretty easy to build and hard to play.

Warlords, like everyone's pointing out, should go with accuracy over damage, because their secondary effects tend to be far more important than how big their [w] is.

So, shoot for a +3 prof weapon, pick up accuracy enhancements for it. Reach weapons are nice, but you might consider going 1h+shield. If, for instance, you pick up a shortsword and shield, you can get nimble blade for an extra +1 to hit on a flank (and it tends to be easy for you to get flanks).

At-will selection really depends on the party. If you have a rogue, get wolf pack tactics, he'll love you for it.

I play an eladrin Tactical Warlord, which I really am enjoying. At the risk of 'me too'ing everything above, I've discovered so far:

Boost Strength and go for any feats that increase accuracy. There are few reliable powers, and many have no miss effect better than a basic attack. Get a +3 weapon. Reach is good as well. I'm fond of the Greatspear.

I do think a lot depends on the party. Blind (or only thinking there may be a rogue in the party) I'd go with Earthsoul Genasi Tactical Warlord. Stat boosts are perfect, and the Earthshock Master Feat is tremendous for both Warlord and his rogue sidekick. (reliable combat advantage? With a little damage thrown in? In a burst? Heck yeah, please!)

If you use backgrounds, Con isn't as important. I'd start Str 17 (19), Int 15 (17), Chr 14 or so, etc. Level 4 means both Str and Int boost (and two defenses as well). I like reach weapons but sword & board may be a better option if you need to go front line often. I would definitely go +3 proficiency weapon, but I generally build for accuracy.
