Warlord

I would love to play the Warlord if it had the following:

HD, BAB, as fighter, good Fort/Will saves
Challenge abilities of a Knight
Inspiration of a Bard

It would be a mundane class (finally, another one!) and a paladin for the masses. Awesome!

I could see it a combo of Knight, Marshal, Bard, Dragon Shaman, etc. A charismatic leader-type with a good set of fighting abilities.

cheers,

It's more likely a core class, with a poor choice in names.

Check the Power Source/Role matrix... you're missing a few essentials... like a Martial Leader. I'm thinking that's the Warlord. Or whatever they call him. I doubt a PrC wouldn't have multiple classes listed. The image the Warlord comes from shows no such additional classes listed.

I have fond memories of a Warlord.

There are now two sources about this new class.
What clue do we have ?
1) it's name : it's war related.
2) it's role : it's supposed to be a leader
3) the fact that the Bard seems to be out. There is stuff to steal.
4) older classes, like the marshall, the aristocrat etc...

I think the warlord will be your typical charismatic leader, with good social and leadership skill. Something akin to Starwars noble. You wanna play the lost heir of the throne ? You need an archvillain that is not a wizard ? Here is the warlord, with decent combat ability, and able to inspire his ally with courage and determination.

The remaining questions is: will he have spells ? I fondly remember the first "warlord" I played, in a Steve Jackson game (no, not gurps, the other steve jackson) it was a spellcaster with martial skill...

I don't understand. Why couldn't your fighter or thief character just as easily be of noble blood?

I'm pretty sure Warlord will be a base class. My guess is it will be a Marshall/Dragon Shaman/Crusader type. Since the class is supposed to fill the same role as a cleric, it will have abilities to buff allies and heal them in some way.

It's also possible that the Warlord will kill the bard and take his stuff.

Edit: Since the 4th ed classes are supposed to be more heroic than in earlier editions warlord is a fine name for a class.

Remember what Bill Slaviscec told us at GenCon?
The sweet spot, which was previously at level 7-14 will now be at level 1-30. Calling a 7th level 3rd.ed. character warlord wouldn't be unreasonable. So, in 4th.ed. it'll be appropriate for a 1st. level character.

I just had a new thought. What if the Warlord actually kills the barbarian & takes his stuff?

My thinking:

While fighter could certainly kill barbarian & take his stuff, this could just as easily have happened to monk or ranger -- but it didn't.

There have been complaints about the barbarian name, as it conflates a culture type with a class.

Societies favoring powerful individual combatants much like the barbarian class also often see those powerful combatants become leaders of warbands -- i.e. 'warlords'.

So... give the barbarian some abilities to incite berzerker status in allies, boost their resistance to fear effects, some other things of this sort, et voila! Barbarian (now renamed Warlord) becomes a martial leader.

Edit: Took out mention of the supposedly-confirmed 8 classes, as it has been clarified that some of those may be in later PHBs
