Like it or not, first-level swordsmen in cheap armor will be introducing themselves as "warlords" and getting laughed out of every tavern in Waterdeep.

If you're ridiculous enough to refer the meta-game constructs (aka classes) in-character, then you deserve to be laughed out of every tavern in every city in the world... and possibly even the game table. That's as silly as responding to an in-character question about your experience by saying "Oh, I've got 100,000 experience points."

I suppose you could change the name to Marshal or Knight or something, and then make your players put a quarter in a jar everytime they say "warlord" at your table.

So, a 1st-level character claiming to be a warlord is silly, but claiming to be a marshal or a knight is not?

Then the first-level swordsmen in cheap armor will be introducing themselves as "Marshals" and getting laughed out of every tavern in Waterdeep, and probably also getting arrested for false identity, forging a military rank and for the attempt of obstruction of the law.

You are right, of course. My suggestion for DMs to rename the class and put a "swear jar" on the table, and my prediction of characters getting laughed at in bars, were meant to be funny. I'm sorry if they came across as inflamatory.

I'm not saying that it would be devoid of silliness, no. But it does seem less silly, if only to me.

Anyway. I'm sorry I keep harping on the name that WotC gave the class; I should have just let the subject drop. Whatever they decided to call it, the warlord is a mechanically interesting class, and the general reaction to it here is quite positive.
