They're sending out a new version now, with different contact into--and its a .de address. I wonder if that's really where they're from, or if it's an attempt to cover their tracks?

I'm sure its just Yahoo shut down the email address they were using.

You know, with all the tech types, law enforcement folk, and (at least one) computer security professionals on these boards, I'd imagine we could find these guys if we put our minds to it.

Have you tried contacting them? They were very helpful when I contacted them for assistance.

Did so this morning. I didn't have to abandon the account, but I did have to forego my verified status (i.e., had to remove the bank account) to change all of the info that I needed to change and disassociate my hacked email address from the account.

See my post in the other thread. I ran a trace on the email. It did, in fact, originate from my POP server. Also, note that (as I mention in the other thread) my Paypal account seems to have been compromised. :(
The emails that I got looked like they came from me, but after checking the headers, they'd just spoofed the email address (which is incredibly easy to do with anyone's email address regardless of whether you've been "hacked" or not).

The bottom line is that just because you recieved an email that looks like it's from you, doesn't necessarily mean they have access to you email account... unless your email password is the same as your white wolf password (which is a bad idea).

Also, email can't be sent from a POP server. It can only be sent from an SMTP server.

Mine was header-spoofed too. The originating server was actually falcon.dnsvs.net [63.247.85.58]. To be safe, I changed my passwords on all my accounts that use my real name and which have my credit card info.

I realize that it's possible to spoof email addresses. Believe it or not, I have seen spam in my eight years or so of putzing around the internet. I also had the forethought to check message headers and check with tech support at the email provider in order to verify that the email originated from my account (which , again, it did).

unless your email password is the same as your white wolf password (which is a bad idea).

Or unless your password is somehow linked to other user information gleaned from the White Wolf server in an obvious mannner (which mine was, as previously stated - I won't say how as it's kind of embarrassing).

Also, email can't be sent from a POP server. It can only be sent from an SMTP server.

That was my bad. In my haste to do nearly fifty things at once (change existing passwords to multiple forum accounts, secure my Paypal account, warn business acquaintances not to accept mail from the old address, etc, etc, etc) I erroneously referred to my outgoing mail server as a POP server. Sue me. I was more than a little pressed for time, given the unauthorized activity on my Paypal acount and my inbox having possibly been raided.

Incidentally, I've since heard that some people are receving a second wave of emails from the hackers. When I last checked my old email account I hadn't received any such mails. Does anybody know if the new mailings are the same thing or different?
