Watching UNBREAKABLE again...

It makes me wonder if Mr Glass/SJ wasn't meant to play to our pre-assumptions about the man playing the character. A villian should be something to be feared, but other than the sick motivations and the lengths at which Mr Glass went about searching for his nemesis, he is not a character to evoke fear or even healthy respect. Having one of the big action guys play the effete Mr Glass - in fact having Mr Bad*** himself, plays to the audiances knowledge (meta-movie) of the man and his potential for cool brutal violence.

Accident or design?

You've inspired me to watch it again tonight. It's one of my favorite movies, up there with PRINCESS BRIDE, FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING, and WAITING FOR GUFFMAN.

I had never watched any of his films before a friend handed me the Unbreakable DVD. I took it home and watched it. All I knew was that Bruce Willis had survived a train wreck without a scratch and Samuel Jackson had some theory about him being invincible.

I was mildly entertained through most of the movie. Not bad, a bit slow, kinda not going anywhere... then Mr. Glass' revelation.

I was floored. In the back of my head, I had wondered if Glass was somehow involved, but I had no idea. WHen it came out, I was glued to the screen. And then, the whole superhero origin came out, and it all just clicked.

I'm now a major fan. Haven't seen Signs yet (mostly lack of time), and I sort of guessed the ending to The Sixth Sense (which really annoyed my friends... they had asked me to guess how the movie ends, because I hadn't seen it. I just pulled it out of nowhere, and they thought I had seen it behind their backs. :D )

Anyway, love those films. He's definately influenced by Indian (far-East) films, now that I've seen a few. Same pacing, same narrative style. I love it. :)

I love the movie. Quite a few people I know don't. I think it has something to do with patience.... and the ability to let something unfold at it's own pace. Because that is what Unbreakable did. I think that because of the insta-violence and action we are all used to.. many people just can't wait anymore. The other thing is, I can't see any holes in the movie (not to say that their aren't any).

Now.. interesting enough.. this is how I would envisage a great begining to a game of Aberrant.

Two quick notes, not related to Unbreakable. These are intense spoilers for Signs, so if you haven't seen it, don't highlight the following text. If you have seen it, though, highlight this text.

Signs was a movie about religion, faith, and a trial of faith. It was a movie about the end of the world, but not about an alien invasion. I hold firm to my belief that the 'aliens' were supposed to represent demons, carrying off the unfaithful. You'll notice that the TV says that the solution of how to defeat them was found in the holy land. And we soon thereafter learn that water burns them.

Now, some people have said this is stupid. 'Why would aliens try to take over a planet that's 70% acid to them?' But that's not the point. It's not just plain old water that burns them.

It was water in the holy land, and water in the house of a holy man. Holy water, burning demons and driving them off, protecting the faithful.

Some of my friends laughed at the movie, and frankly pissed me off. They wanted 'Independence Day' or 'Alien,' and they missed the whole point of the movie.

Well, that's the end of the spoilers.

Well, that's the end of the spoilers.

The background color is #222222 instead of 'black', which I'm sure you've realized by now :) People can see it just fine. Now, some non-spoiler text is below.

Hmmm. I'll have to watch the DVD, but I'm pretty sure the TV simply says that 'some people have found a primitive solution' to the problem. Nope, can't buy the demon idea, not even a little bit. I don't know the exact requirements for 'holy water' but I'm pretty sure that just tap water placed in the home doesn't qualify.

My idea behind the aliens is that what we see is a kind of construct, easy to produce and easy to destroy; not whatever is up in those ships. As far as why they leave, good question. But then, they're aliens. Their drives and motivations would probably be an eternal mystery to us.
