Watta Tweest!

The rogue (pretending to be a ranger) and the ranger/fighter entered a desert cave. At the back of the cave, a large cougar lay on the ground next to a natural shaft. The rogue and ranger snuck up on the cougar and killed it before it could notice them.

The rogue and ranger went down the shaft. At the bottom, they found some bad guys about to sacrifice a damsel in distress. They killed the bad guys and rescued the damsel.

When she was untied, the damsel asked the PCs, "Have you seen my animal companion? He was a big cougar. I'm sure he was trying to rescue me."

They ended up lying to her and saying they had never seen the animal.

I have a tendency to make things the heroes' fault. The heroes visited a world with a very small group of humans living in a vast, untamed wilderness. Delving into the wilderness's depths, they encountered a plant race who had been unaware of humans...and once they knew about them and studied them for a few months (in game time), they decided humans were a detriment to nature. So the plant race ventured out into the multiverse and proceeded to conquer areas and exterminate the humans.

Seeking the fulfillment of a prophecy, the heroes visited a community on Bytopia. They crossed paths with a merchant from the aforementioned plant race, refused to sell him some goods they were bartering in the community, and when they left, the plant race assaulted the community.

The party's cleric is a fervent proselytizer; however, his god floats lifeless on the Astral Plane. His constant speeches about the glory of his god caught the attention of a group of divinity miners...now his god's corpse is being cut up to provide "fuel" for an as-yet-unknown scheme.

The heroes have been chaperoning the modrons on their unscheduled march around the Great Ring (heavily modified Great Modron March), working for a group of mysterious beings called the Four-Horned Feathered Fowl. For months they've taken the beings' advice, gone on adventures they've suggested, and acquired items they've asked for...only now have the heroes realized they've been providing the Fowl with the means to destroy reality...

My players are very plucky and taking everything in stride, but I'm beginning to think I might discourage them if I keep the theme going...
