[Way OT] 129th Running of the Kentucky Derby!

The irony is that the winning horse, FunnyCide, is a gelding. The way you make money in horse racing is with the stud fees from your winning horse. That won't be possible here, obviously. That was quite an expensive snip, wouldn't you say?:p

Also kind of interesting because he's the first Gelding to win the Kentucky Derby, since a horse sired by Man O' War did it in 1929 - Clyde Van Dusen (the name of the horse, oddly enough).

While yes, that was an expensive snip, there are generally reasons for it related to health, temperment or other mitigating factors.

If Funny Cide could win the triple crown (extremely unlikely) he would be the first Gelding to do so. But I keep holding out for a Triple Crown winner to capture some of the magic of horse racing that was captured by such horses as Seabiscuit, Citation, Secretariat, Man O' War, War Admiral and many others...

Kentucky Derby is the first of three...but (and nothing against Funny Cide), there is no way we'll have a Triple Crown winner this year.

Funny Cide pulled off a helluva win with the Derby, but imnsho, there is no way that horse has legs for the Belmont or Preakness.

I didn't see the Derby, but I was at the 78th running of the Virginia Gold Cup yesterday. If any of you in the are haven't heard of it, it is a really good time. The races (they have terrier races as well) are quite something.

And it's a great excuse to wear straw hats and drink bourbon in beautiful country in the sun.

Seabiscuit did not win any of the triple crown races. He didn't come into his own until later in his career.

Empire Maker lost primarily because of traffic. Bailey said before the race that he was going to follow one of the speed horses out of the gate and try to stay close to him. My guess is that he picked Indian Express and since Indian Express had an absolutely horrible trip, so did Empire Maker. Having so many horses in a single race like the Derby makes it pretty tough to win the Triple Crown. You not only have to be a great horse, but you also need a great trip. Look at War Emblem last year. He walked through the first six furlongs and had enough in him to hold off the other horses. If Empire Maker runs in the Preakness, he'll probably go off at a pretty nice price making him an attractive bet. It's a shame that he didn't win because the sport desperately needs a star, and I don't think that Funny Cide has enough to win the next two legs.

I lumped Seabiscuit in there because he captured the magic of racing, not because of his triple crown record...which is non-existant.

I also think they allow WAY too many horses to run these races. Field should be limited to 10, if not 8.
