Way to block detection of illusions?

(well, enchantment and prot from evil also comes to mind).

Just a little sidenote: There are only two enchantment spells in the PHB, which are hindered by Protection from Evil.

First off how many detect magics is one wizard going to prepare? He/she won't have many 0 level slots and preparing a lvl 0 in higher level slots is just silly. If a wizard does cast detect magic in a room with lets say illusory wall on it he will know that is it an illusion, assuming he makes the check. Good job he made it through a spell cast 5 years ago by the illusionist. Now the fake walls and ceilings were created in a room that is made of lets say 16 doors 4 for each verticle wall. The illusory wall was just covering up these doors to make it look like a room with no exit. So the lvl 0 spell the wizard cast helped the wizard I.D. the illusion, not dispelling it or stoping it from impeding vision really. Only one of those doors leads anywhere useful. Ok useful for a lvl 0 spell. The next room the wizard comes into is a bit suspicious and he casts detect magic again revealing another illusory wall spell. This time its covering up a guards and wards spell that has nystul's magic aura cast upon it. Anyways the point I'm getting at is, unless the wizard brings a wand of detect magic he can only find out what is really an illusion for so long. On top of that illusions work the best when coupled with crafty tricks and traps. Having a persistant image of a wall for a few minutes might just be covering up a room filled with traps or a dead end and the party goes that way because of the assumption that if it was cast there something important must be behind it. Illusion is a tough school and I think that you definitely need other source material, such as the books of eldritch might, to make the school more potent. Be creative, be inventive thats how illusion is meant to played IMHO. :p

Nystul's Undetectable Aura is an illusion spell that can easily be used to bypass Detect Magic. We use it all the time in campaigns, it's great!

We also have a 2nd and 4th level version of the spell, with better duration.

I've read some things where you can use the Bluff skill to disguie verbal and somantic components. Makes things interesting.

As for the castle, play with your characters. Let the illusionist plant half real dangers and half illusionary. Let your players constamtly roll for disbelief (Is that really a hired medusa merc over there?)

Some liberal use of Nystyl"s (I think) magical aura could get them walking into pools of acid that are really acid, especially if they're pressed or time and can't wait for three rounds... :]

Nystul's only works on items. I dunno when items become areas, but I wouldn't consider a pool of acid to be an item.

I guess that's the crux of the problem; there needs to be a Nystul's magical aura version for areas.

You could always enchant the tiles under said pool...

or you could make one...

Probably a level higher, and enchants an area of 5' per level.

You can't get ahead of other BBEG's without having mastered your trade, and it could make a nice prize for your mage (if your so inclined). If not, you coyld always use Alchemy to line the spellbook with dynamite...

When wandering through an area, where magic is to be expected, at least in our games, you can bet, that someone has Detect Magic or Arcane Sight on at any time. These spells are always prepared multiple times, of course.

Of course not, if that area is so huge, that it takes several hours to explore, but that's rarely the case. A single Detect Magic is usually good for more than "one room", tho.

Objects, not items. 5 pounds worth per caster level. So a few bricks in a wall, a few tiles on a floor, a curtain, a chair, the third step on a staircase (the second and fourth should be trapped), etc.
