Maybe have them use the status spell and expand it a bit to let them know how the dying is progressing?
I don't see it as a bad thing that PCs eagerly seek to help dying PCs out. I've run campaigns where PCs just ignore dying PCs and concentrate on finishing the battle and if the dying PCs die, they die. Not fun if you're playing the dying PC.
