Wealth rating HR- looking for feedback

I am looking to remove unwanted accounting from my d&d game and came up with these wealth rules. The are abstract and odd at first but I (and my group only have 4-5 hours to run a game and from previous experiences after a large haul we could easily spend 1-2 hours dividing up treasure. I want make a serious cut into that time by instituting this house rule.

Wealth: Each character’s wealth rating starts at 5 + Charisma modifier. Characters can increase their wealth rating by selling items to increase their wealth. The gp cost of an item is 1 or more steps higher the character can increase the wealth rating by a number of steps equal to half the difference. Example: you have a 10 wealth rating sell a 160,000 gp item (18), 10-18 =8 and 8/2 =4. So your wealth rating increases by 4 to 14.

So a level 1 Sorcerer with 18 Cha can buy an unlimited number of items (say, Potions of Cure Light Wounds and Caster Level 3 Scrolls of Magic Missile) as long as they cost less than 80gp each?

Seems off to me.

Yeah, that does seem a little off do you have any suggestions that could help there?

How about:
They get a weekly allowance of wealth -2. Instead of buying any and all under their wealth -2.

I dont mind it being arbitrary and abstract. But I dont want unlimited X. So that was a good call for some reason that did not register.

Why not use the d20 Modern Wealth rules? It's probably easier than building a new system from scratch.

They implicitly limit "unlimited" purchases by enforcing time required to find an item as well as making the Wealth rating a little more fluid.

The d20 Game of Thrones RPG had good Wealth rules, you wouldn't go wrong taking a look at them for guidance. A port of the Exalted wealth rules might work with some conversion as well.
