Quick question. Can a monk use weapon finesse for his unarmed attacks?

Yes, but remember he needs to have BAB +1, so he has to wait till at least third level as a straight monk.

A follow up question.

Can you 'save' feats? I want to take Weapon focus (unarmed) and Weapon Finesse (unarmed) for my monk. I'm human so I can have 2 feats at first level, but if I spend those 2, I won't have those feats until I am 6th level. So can I 'save' those 2 feats until I meet the requirements for the 2 feats in question?

According to the rules, no. The feats have to be spent when you get them. Otherwise, you are getting the feats earlier then you should. That's one of the reasons that feats have prerequistes, so that it takes so long for certain classes to get them.

However, many DMs allow this or will make exceptions (Our DM allowed the Monk to take weapon focused unarmed for instance for background character reasons).

So, talk to your DM about what you want to do. Or figure out two other feats till that will help you out now and wait for the others.

In fact, the only thing you can save is XP. Saving XP is nice if you create lots of magic items. However, any XP you save cannot be used for leveling purposes and is set aside for magic item creation only. Found this in the DMG somewhere, but I can't remember where. I'll see if I can find it again.

Dude 6 level isn't that far. And you might want other feats down the road that you could take now (like Combat Reflexes, Imp Init, Dodge, etc) that don't have as high a prereq. And check out OA for the exchanging of Monk abilities at 1st, 2nd, and (I think) 6th for feats from the Martial Arts lists... You might be able to drop Deflect Arrows at 2nd for one them

TTFN

Edit: For those without OA, it allows for Monks to exchange a class ability (Stunning Attack at 1st, Deflect Arrows at 2nd, and/or Improved Trip at 6th) for a feat chosen from the Martial Arts table. The Monk must meet the prereq's for the chosen feat. The feats Weapon Focus, and Weapon Finesse aren't on the list, however your DM might allow you to get them to fit with your Monk's fighting style concept (I would as it isn't that big a stretch, and then you could get them at 2nd and 3rd level...)
