D&D (2024) Weapon mastery

I'm going to vote Flex as the clear weakest option.

Versatile is nearly never used, and getting a meager +1 damage isn't going to make the difference.
I think Flex will be nice for 13th level+ fighters, as an always-useful option to pair with a more impactful but situational mastery. Otherwise, it’s bad.

I've never seen anyone throw because you wouldn't get it back. Especially if it's magical.

Though the new blade lock gets returning. I could see them picking up weapons mastery to throw tridents.
Why wouldn’t you get it back? It’s not like the dagger (or whatever) evaporates after hitting. We loot the bodies after almost every fight anyway, just pick your weapon back up then.

That would require changing versatile.

Oh.
What if versatile had 2 different masteries?

Long sword in 1 hand is d8 with sap.
Long sword in 2 hands is d10 with vex.

I do still think that there should be a simple damage boost option. But it should be higher that a single die increase.

Reliable: roll the weapon damage die twice and take the highest.

... +1.31 damage on a d8. Might still be a little weak.
Graze is a pretty good simple damage option

Versatile weapon users getting shafted? who could have guessed so?

It's a core sin of 5E when the valued Finesse the same as Versatile.

Versatile is basically a non-property used in desperate situations to get "at least something"

1Handed weapons as longswords, battleaxes and warhammers should have 1d10 damage(d12 versatile).
Then having Flex mastery with d12 1Handed damage can compete with d8 finesse with Vex

True. You can't stack prone, and not all fighters will want to push enemies away.

So topple, flex, flex could be the best option.

Still think it could use a little bit more though.

If you have a +1 javelin and throw it...

You're going to be attacking at -1 for the rest of combat.

Just updated my fighter to it. It's certainly an improvement. Is it enough of an improvement? I'd have to play it. Also: I liked the fighter fine before, so it ought to be okay.
