Weapon of Returning?

I'm glad that this sparked some interesting comments, because I feel pretty dumb for not checking the Ranged Weapons list for the ability. Thanks for the help all. :D

I cannot begin to comprehend the terror that could be wreaked upon a campaign that allowed returning to be put on melee weapons that didn't have a range increment or the 'throwing' enchantment.

No, really I can't.

As in - I can't comprehend why it would be a problem.

If someone really wants to have an ineffective thrown weapon that returns, then let them. It's not like they're gaining much.

Well, allowing Ranged weapon abilities to be placed on Melee weapons is one step from allowing Melee weapon abilities to be placed on Ranged weapons, and that opens the door to Arrows of Spell Storing, and [Egon]it would be Bad[/Egon].

this is a little off topic but the question got me thinking is there a summon weapon ability? like +1 for a weapon that is stored in interdimentional space and the weilder can summon it into their hand as a standrd or free action.

Why can't you throw a bow? Are they covered in tanglefoot goo? If you take the rule to its english language end, then every single weapon is a weapon that can be thrown. It isn't necessarily a weapon that can be thrown at someone to deal damage, but you can most certainly throw it.

That said, I'd don't see a game balance reason to disallow Returing on a ongsword, but there are probably other ranged weapon enhancements that wouldn't be proper (seeking springs to mind), unless it was ruled that it only worked when the weapon was thrown.

I'd call that an "object that can be thrown" :) While you're throwing it, it's not a weapon... whereas a longsword still is, under the rules for improvised thrown weapons.

There are a few items I think that would make rather crappy thrown weapons. :)

Whips, arrows, scythes, lances, gauntlets, slings, two bladed swords. They just seem a bit... funny... to be throwing. :)
