Weapon type vs armor bonuses/penalties

I am looking over the DM Guide and noticed there is an optional rule, which gives bonuses and penalties to hit – which is based on damage type and targeted armor.

This made me think – has there ever been a detailed chart, which gives bonuses and penalties based on the weapon used opposed to the damaged type dealt to a particular armor?

Due to the latter, I was thinking of crafting a chart that would give bonuses and penalties on a “weapon vs armor type” method.

Yes. It's on p 38 of the first edition PHB. The AC is to be understood as the type of armor that would produce the equivalent AC, as opposed to natural armor or any other factors.

Do you use this table with 2nd Edition? I do not have 1st edition AD&D?

As far as I know, 1E and 2E are identical in terms of how you calculate the target number for a to-hit roll, so I don't see why you wouldn't be able to use the table unaltered.

Few folks did even use it in 1st edition. It is one of those rules where the term "optional" actually makes sense. :)

I tried in in the very first game I ran, erroneously going by AC instead of armour type. After I noted the error I considered doing a different table to make it easier but realised that armour didn't play an important enough role in our games and modifying for weapon vs. armour type just wasn't worht the hassle.
