Weapons + natural attacks...

What is the penalty if any for a creature uses a weapon in addition to a natural attack.

Instead of Claw/Claw/Bite could a troll use a Greatsword/Bite?

How about a Mindflayer, could he use his tentacles in addition to a weapon?

sword/bite

... sword would be normal attack/ bite -5 attack

unless the troll has multiattack, then it would be sword=normal/bite=-2

There's no rule for this, which is lame. I'm not saying that it doesn't make sense, there is just not a rule to cover the common (IMO) scenario of something with natural attacks also wanting to use weapons. You basically have to house rule something if you want it to use anything but the armed combat rules (so primary iterative attacks and one off-hand attack with the bite).

Dragon # 292 (The Get Wild/Dinosaur issue) has rules for it. I don't know if they are the "this is how we did it" rules or "this is how it works from now on" rules.

Anyway, Wolf is right. The weapon becomes the primary attack, and the natural attack is at -5 (and can only have .5 of the strength mod for damage, even if it normally is the full mod).

Does this apply only to creatures who mix their weapons with natural attacks (like trolls), or with wildshaped druids as well (with the MotW rules)?

I would have thought that using anything but strictly natural attacks would mean you use your normal # attacks (from BAB) and the two weapon fighting rules to mix them.

The suggestion of the weapon simply replacing your primary attack, however, is much more advantageous if it applies to wildshaped druids....

MM

p7 "the remaining weapons are secondary and have -5 to the attack bonus, no matter how many there are. Creatures with the multiattack feat ... suffer only a -2 penalty to secondary attacks."

when I read this I assume that the creature chooses a primary attack (full attack bonus) ie Greatsword (say at +6/+1) ... and then it's bite is at +1 (6-5) ... iterive attacks for weapons only, not natural attacks.
