Weapons of Legacy Question

Wik

First Post
Alright, so I've been perusing the Weapons of Legacy book, and I have a stupid question:

You learn enough information about the weapon to activate the least legacy and get the least legacy feat. What, exactly, does that mean?

Does that mean that you can activate powers from 5th to 10th level, until you have to get the lesser legacy feat? Or am I missing something, here?

I like the ideas presented, but they're not worded very well. Is this how you use the book?

You have to read through Weapons of Legacy a couple times before it starts to make sense. I recommend working through creating your own custom item; that really clarifies how everything works.

Yes, you have to acquire the Least Legacy feat before you can activate the Least Legacy powers (pretty intuitive), and so on and so forth up the chain.

It's not a stupid question, the book does a terrible job explaining that- and never really explicitly states it.

You guessed right however. :)

Basically how it works is, you get the info, you do the ritual, the ritual provides the 5th-10th level feat for free (well including the cost for the ritual). Then every level you advance from 5th to 10th the weapon powers up accordingly (along with the penalties). When you hit 11th and want to do the next ritual, you need to get more info, do the next ritual (which provides the next feat for free). And so on and so forth.

None of the players that I have played with really like the system, well Blarg and I are the only ones that actually sat down and read the book. We both believe that the penalties are too steep and have been trying to come up with a way to axe the penalties, maybe by increasing the cost of the rituals or adding some more RP things needed to advance the weapons...

Cheers,
E

I also have a question about the WoL, though I suspect I know the answer. The levels that you gain said powers at, is that character level, or does it not count level adjustments and racial hit die?

The penalties are way too big. Yeah, I'm really going to take a glorified magic weapon in exchange for the equivalent of a bunch of permanent negative levels. *shakes head*

I've had an idea about that, though I admit I've never had the chance to playtest it.

Normally, the Weapon of Legacy feats that you gain through the rituals are bonus feats. I've thought it might be interesting to say that if you're willing to spend a normal feat slot for them, you gain the benefits without the drawbacks.

(And yes, there would have to be some allowance for losing or giving up the weapon. Maybe the slots are freed up, or maybe you can transfer them to a different WoL. Not sure; as I said, never playtested it.)

Thoughts?

Damn Mouse, that definitely has merit :) Going to get together with Blarg to sort out some house rules to make them viable, will let ya know what we come up with :D

What Erywin said is correct. It took me a fair bit of reading and page flicking to figure out just how the whole Weapon of Legacy thing worked too. It gets worse too. The book contradicts itself as to whether or not the loss of spell slots is cumulative. One part of the book says that they are and another says that you only lose the highest level spell slot.

I think that they could have done a much better job with how they ordered the book. It feels like it was a bit rushed in my opinion.
