candles are solid fuel, mostly. and miner do not perform cartwheels while shooting crossbows and dodging fireballs.
No reason a fighter couldn’t stick a candle on their helmet. It’s likely to be lost in a fight, but they can replace it afterwards. A helmet designed for a candle would have a spike to hold it in place. Miners have to do some pretty physical stuff.

Depending how "medieval" you want your D&D, this miner's helmet has a carbide lamp, which generates a lot less heat than oil.

You could always have Fantasy Oil(tm), that burns with a lot less excess heat than real world oil.

So far the only "yes" has been with the asterisk of it being a magic lantern 😆
Well that makes me feel a bit better with my decision. I do wonder where the idea originated... Was it considered in earlier editions? I can't recall.

Yes. I couldn't care less. Is it Victorian design? Yes. But with so much magic light sources and everyone and their grandma having darkvision, why not. D&D tech isn't medieval anyway.

Only exception is if i run no/low fantasy, historical setting.

in the interest of not making the martial alternative to a cantrip vastly inferior yes you can wear them on your belt, however things like the lantern of revealing would actively need to be held because...otherwise they don't properly shed their light on things to reveal them say, you can wear the LoR on your belt and have it shed regular light but you have to hold it up to properly reveal stuff.

This is canon! Drow cities are well known to have permanent faerie fire illuminating buildings as both a source of light, messaging, and artistic flair.
well, relying on darkvision alone for living sure sucks, darkvision is basically, I do not fight with penalties in the dark.
