Weatherbug

aarrrgh! my wife's computer is terribly infected with this damnable program. i've tried a few things to get rid of it (Adaware, spybot S&D, spy sweeper) to get rid of it, and while those programs got rid of darn near everything else, weatherbug seems to have escaped it.

is this one OK to just delete?

log in or register to remove this ad

Right click on the icon in the system tray & select "close".

Go to the add/remove programs utility.
(---Start/Settings/Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs)

Weatherbug should show up on the list and you can uninstall it.

It will not show up in Add or Remove programs if it is still running in the background so you have to make sure you close it first. You should also
have IE set as your default browser before you try to uninstall it as well.

If that doesn't work you can find try the following:

1. Click on the Windows START Button then select RUN.
2. In the RUN box, type "regedit" (without the quotes) then click OK. This will open your Windows Registry Editor (following ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS, some of these keys will already be removed -- if you do not find a key, please move on to the next step).
3. Click on the plus sign next to the folder named HKEY_CURRENT_USER
4. Click on the plus sign next to the folder named Software
5. Click on the folder, "AWS," to highlight it
6. Press the DELETE key on your keyboard and choose "YES" to delete this folder
7. Click on the plus sign next to the folder named Microsoft
8. Click on the plus sign next to the folder named Windows
9. Click on the plus sign next to the folder named CurrentVersion
10. Click on the folder named Run to highlight it (only the "Run" folder)

In the right-hand pane, look for a line stating "Weather." If you see it, please click on it to highlight it then press the DELETE key on your keyboard and select "YES."

To delete the AWS directory: Click Windows START, PROGRAMS, and WINDOWS EXPLORER. If you accepted the default installation, please click on the "+" beside PROGRAM FILES and then highlight the AWS folder. Press the DELETE key on your keyboard and select YES or OK.

While still in Windows Explorer, click on the WINDOWS folder to highlight it. In the right-hand pane, scroll all the way to the end and look for a file labeled "WeatherBug.ini." Highlight the file and press the DELETE key on your keyboard and select YES or OK.

(On some versions of Windows, you may have to click on a link in the right-hand pane of EXPLORER and select a link that will show all files in that folder).

Restart your computer and the uninstall is complete.

thanks. :) it looks like i was able to remove the program using the simpler set of instructions, but then i guess i won't really know until i restart her computer. ;)

i still see the weatherbug icon on this IE window, but the shortcuts are gone from the desktop and start menu.

The more complex instructions were taken directly from weatherbug's support page.

I must say there is a problem with an app when the company that makes it tells you to start hacking your registry in order to remove it!

Weatherbug sounds familiar. I may be wrong, but that could be the one I erased simply by going into DOS, hunting it down myself, and deleting it.

as far as i can tell, things are OK with it now. but then, i haven't been back on her computer since i "fixed" it, so i can't really say. :)

as with most people who have weatherbug on my computer, i'd have to say it probably "snuck" in without being noticed. both she and i have had that program on our computer, and certainly never downloaded it on purpose.
