WEG's d6 system is fine so long as you:
1) Give out the regular experience awards listed per session, and not more than that
2) The character's skills don't go much higher than 10D
In the case of the star wars system, too much emphasis was placed on the force skills, and on force points. They were neat ideas, but a jedi with all three force skills at decent levels barely needed any other skill to be effective, and a Jedi with a lightsaber in hand, about 10D in each force skill, spending force points? LOOK OUT!!!
I liked beginning characters in that system, but as the dice totals creeped above 8D in many skills and customized lightsabers and blaster damages, it would slow us down, to the point where we were breaking out of game and into accounting mode as we counted up dice on each action, reaction, etc. Whereas some people had problems with adding up numerous small disparate bonuses to a d20, my problem was having to add up points from the die rolls with every single action on the fly, because with d20 I could add up all my bonuses beforehand and only do it once.
It's also why Shadowrun used to turn me off, too - it was like a miniature d6-game for the target numbers, carried out with each die. (The newer shadowun does it in a way more amenable to my math-skills, as well).
