[bump]

It's 7:15 pm (PST), and 100 people have voted. 75% say RC, 25% say AD&D 2e. I suppose one could say that it's a lock at this point, I'm sure you'll all agree that "it ain't over till it's over" and all that.

So please vote, if you haven't had a chance! The polls close at 9:45 pm tonight! Just TWO HOURS and THIRTY MINUTES!

Thanks to all who have contributed! Remember, YOUR VOTE IS BINDING ON OUR GROUP!

You will probably want to pick up the Creature's Catalog if you have the chance. Also, check out the classic modules B2, B3, B4, X1, and X2.

Good Gaming.

My vote is for 2e. I would eschew any game where the only alignments are "law, neutral, and chaos" and where dwarves and elves are classes. OD&D (in any incarnation) belongs in the dust bin of history along with HR Puff 'N' Stuff, bell bottoms, and hot pants.

2e, because I think it will allow you to integrate the flavors of the different settings a bit easier. Besidea I only used the rules encyclopedia to run Test of the Warlords, Death's Ride, Sabre River, and a couple of other modules. I used 2e for its full run, so I recall those rules a lot better.

If you do use 2e definitely avoid the "options" books. Those were the real failing of 2e.

2E I reckon. Despite the fact that it's not nice-and-elegant-all-in-one-book like the RC, it's got the following going for it:

1) Significantly better splat, by which I mean a much larger selection of monsters and spells that don't suck, and that's a biggie. RC has some real stinkers in there, and the path of least resistance is not to have to bother to convert stats.
2) Better artwork. Except for the Easley cover, the artist who did the interior of the RC conveys completely the wrong vibe, IMO. The irony is he was a 2E era artist, but the artwork of the original 2E PHB (not the black one, which has pretty lousy art in there IMO) beats it on that count.

But despite your pleas in the original post, there is no other way this poll could have gone. 2E was demonised by the time 3E came along and has too much baggage for people to view it objectively, whereas RC is elegant in that it's all in the one nifty book. One nifty book, see? :)
