Were there clerics in Lord of the Rings?

Hi TerraDave:)

Hate to disabuse you, but the story you mention is absolute balderdash. My former wife hated gaming and gamers, had absolutely no positive influence on or input in the creation of the D&D game.

Col, thanks again for taking time to set things straight!

And are we still trying to figure out if there where clerics in LOTR...or is it just if there were spells(?!)... :uhoh:

By Elf Lord I refered to High Elves, or Noldor, so you're interpretation is the same as mine. Glorfindel, for example, would easily translated into the D&D Paladin class. It is likely Gil-galad would, as well.
Easily? Could they detect evil, lay on hands and remove disease?

Welcome!

It is a sure thing that there were nary any of the priestly stamp in the LoTR trilogy. At best apologists for this lack, if it is that, can attempt parallels between clerical roles and some obscure mention in the books, but JRRT did a good job of bringing religion into the work.

Cheers,
Gary
