Unlikely to be considered "best" but that Eye of the Beholder game was fantastic. I actually completed the game*, it was that good.

*my ratio of owned video game rpgs and completed games is below 50%, don't ask how low below....

As a stand-alone story, Planescape: Torment. In terms of replay value, the Neverwinter Nights series takes the crown because it came with a toolset that was routinely upgraded and expanded. I passed many, many hours playing various modules made by some surprisingly good story tellers. I'd buy a modernized version in a heartbeat.

Odin's beard, yes. So good. I fed so many quarters were into Gauntlet's gullet.

But of the actually branded games, I think I might go with Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance. I remember the graphics blowing me away (at the time). And it was steeped in Realmslore. I tend not to care for videogames that focus heavily on party management, so the main Baldur’s Gate series never caught on with me.

Gauntlet (the original 80's arcade version)

The Bard's Tale from the 80's on Commodore 64.

They did a kickstarter for a new Bard's Tale that's well along. And as part of it they also gave the first three running under an emulator.

Though I have fond memories of it on my C=64 as well. The SID chip gave much better music then other computers of that era.

Though if we're heading off actual D&D-branded, Dragon Age: Origins and Pillars of Eternity should be considered - I think they both beat Icewind Dale and stand up well to the first Balder's Gate even adjusting for advances in computers. If it wasn't for Planescape: Torment ...
