By far, the best D&D video game was an unlicensed one that came out in 1987: Final Fantasy.

To this day, Final Fantasy IV represents the ideal D&D campaign to me. I mean, if you could somehow contrive player actions to follow a rather narrow sequence of events. Which would kind of defeat the point of playing an RPG. But you can still throw all of those elements into a game world, and hope things turn out that well! The original game is much better about not railroading the party.

I actually came back here to talk about this. Still a pretty solid interpretation of the D&D ruleset, even if Vancian spellcasting is eternally frustrating from a video game perspective.

And they at least had the decency to redraw the Beholder sprite for the U.S. release.

Yeah. I think Planescape: Torment was definitely the better game, but Baldur’s Gate II did more to publically champion RPG games and D&D.

Eye of the Beholder deserves a consolation hug, and Gold Box games are the rose-tinted but deeply flawed romance from my younger days.

As a stand-alone story, Planescape: Torment. In terms of replay value, the Neverwinter Nights series takes the crown because it came with a toolset that was routinely upgraded and expanded. I passed many, many hours playing various modules made by some surprisingly good story tellers. I'd buy a modernized version in a heartbeat.

If you didn’t play the Penultima series I’d reaquire the game and find it. Amazing, deep and hilarious.

Morrus, I believe you conflated the Neverwinter Nights version from the last 80's, which was a version of the 'gold box' games (similar to Pool of Radiance) that was integrated into AOL and was the first iteration of that name in a PC game.
The Neverwinter Nights that was made in the mid 2000's is the one that allowed for DMs and modules.
In the episode you mentioned that Neverwinter Nights came out in the 80's, yet decribed the 2000's version.
Just thought I would clear that up for you.

On another note, I've downloaded the original Pool of Radiance from GOG.com and am playing it with my daughters, who are quite enjoying themselves. So even though the graphics are not up to current standards, the storyline and gameplay works fine. (especially for those who spend a good portion of their time in Minecraft, and therefore don't mind pixelized graphics.
