What 8th-level Monsters Need Converting?

the Jester

Legend
Or, put another way, what cool monsters aren't in the 4e Monster Manual would make a good 8th-level monster?

So far, I have:

8th level Monsters to Be Converted

Ant Lion, Giant
Cockatrice
Kopru
Loxo
Mudmaw
Ooze, Stunjelly
Redcap
Rhinoceros
Slug, Giant
Snake, Anaconda
Stench Kow

Higher Level Monsters On the List

Aurumvorax [I'll prolly do this one around 12th level]
Crimson Death [16th level or thereabouts?]
Elemental, invisible stalker [? right about 10th?]
Giant, Cloud
Giant, Frost
Gray Ooze [9th level elite]
Lurker Above [15th level?]
Neogi may be better off around 10th-13th level
Trapper [18th level?]
Vampiric mist [11th level or thereabouts?]

Hazards to be Converted

Mantrap
Tri-Flower Frond

Golem, Ooze (8)
Sand Kraken (8)
Sand Stalker (8)
Redcap (nice, high-ish level nasty fey)

Carrion Moth (Level 9)
Sleeping Willow (10)

I'll have to go through the Template book, and the Monstronomicon (a favorite of mine). Though it looks like some things should be lower level, but you've all ready done those levels. I may have to crack open Denizens of Dread and give it a go.

Do you have Sandstorm, Jester?

I only have one for level 8, the Kopru. That's in the Mystara book, but I think it got updated in Shipwrack or some other 3.5 reference.

Nice to see you're back, Jester! :) Hope you've been able to use some of these monsters, hey?

Carrion Moth (Tome of Horrors)
Golem, Ooze (ToM 2 pg 86)
Sand Kraken (ToM2 pg 136)
Sand Stalker (ToM2 pg 137)
Sleeping Willow (ToM2 pg 147)

Others from the ToM
Trapper
Lurker Above
Slug (Giant)

For some reason, Sandstorm was one of my favorite supplements. I never did get to play a desert campaign though.

I haven't even left yet. That's a week from Monday- or maybe even Sunday night. Who knows- final pre-Burn planning meeting is coming up on Monday, and we'll see what we see then. :) This is just a short creative burst while I have a few hours free- I'm actually remarkably prepared in advance for myself.

Hope you've been able to use some of these monsters, hey?

So far I've used in play:

Xvart slavers
Xvart ratkeepers
Giant lizards
Darkmantles
Lesser darkmantles
Blindheims
Assassin vines
Giant crabs (that was a tough fight for 1st-level pcs!)

Carrion Moth (Tome of Horrors)
Golem, Ooze (ToM 2 pg 86)
Sand Kraken (ToM2 pg 136)
Sand Stalker (ToM2 pg 137)
Sleeping Willow (ToM2 pg 147)

Ah, I don't actually own ToH2 (I assume you meant ToH, not ToM? If not, what's ToM?) I'll check out the carrion moth, though, and see if it inspires me. :)

Darkmantles
Lesser darkmantles
Assassin vines
Giant crabs (that was a tough fight for 1st-level pcs!)
I plan on using these (along with a few others), so I was wondering how they worked out for you.

Yes. ToH, not m. Also, dangit. Ah well. The monsters I mentioned are pretty simplistic, though the ooze golem and the sleeping willow might be a little diff.

Darkmantles (including the lesser ones) were great.

The giant crabs, as I said, were rough- lots of damage, and several levels higher than the pcs. Add in the blindheim, and you had a tough encounter! But they seemed about right.

The assassin vines- hate to say it, but the party skill checked their way out of having to fight them and their crazy xvart gardener elite ratkeeper guy. :(
